Winter Pruning - Summary of This Week

Artistic Landscapes enjoyed the winter pruning that we did this week as the weather was fabulous. It was more enjoyable than usual pruning plants while the sun was out and we were walking on dry ground.
Annually, we prune most Fall flowering shrubs as well as Rose of Sharon and Burning Bush plants sometime between January 1st and March 1st. We find that we are able to prune 3' - 4' off of many plants during this dormant period without the homeowner seeing the cuts (from their perspective their plants were a bunch of sticks (no foliage) when we arrived and a bunch of sticks when we left (much smaller). The plants do well because their energy is stored in their roots and the main branches. As a result, we take advantage of the winter months to routinely shape and control the size of fall flowering plants while they are dormant.

We also prune back large hydrangeas during this dormant period. We find that the hydrangeas that are 8' - 10' tall in October will grow back to 8' - 10' next year even if we cut 4' off of each branch. The homeowner benefits from this pruning because they will not be losing any flowers/buds as each branch will have a hydrangea flower on them next summer/fall.

Please feel free to call us or stop by our Office on Route One in Rowley, MA if you would like to discuss pruning that you want to do yourself or have us take care of it for you.
