Sitting Walls
A sitting wall is a great addition around a firepit for friends to gather. When a retaining wall is approximately 18" higher than the patio or lawn this it can provide additional seating.
Artistic Landscapes of Rowley, MA builds natural stone and segmental sitting walls throughout the North Shore region of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. The goal of a sitting wall is to be aesthetically pleasing and serve the needs of each client. The sitting walls that we build typically surround a firepit or provide dual service as a retaining wall with additional seating. Our goal is to finish the sitting wall approximately 18” above the patio or lawn. When space allows, we build our sitting walls approximately 20” deep to provide maximum comfort to sit and relax. We listen to each clients’ goals before designing and recommending the height and style of your retaining wall.
We believe all sitting walls need a base of ¾” crushed stone, followed by a drainage area behind the wall and more ¾” crushed stone. We install a layer of landscape fabric between the existing soil and the drainage area to provide adequate drainage for years to come. As a final measure, we install a perforated drainage pipe to collect water that does not drain quickly to provide a safe drain for the wall. Our sitting walls are typically built with wall stones manufactured by Unilock or Techo-Block.
Walls can be capped with granite, bluestone, limestone or the same stones used to build your wall.
